Tip of the Month

February 2012: When it comes to managing well, it pays to escape to another world

Good managers know when to take a break—and when to encourage their staff members to, as well. One great way to educate your mind, warm your heart, and feed your soul, is to pick up a good book.

In fact, it’s a delightful diversion that I indulge in all too infrequently. I’ll drive myself over to the public library and wander the stacks until a single book calls my name.

It’s always a random book, nothing that I am hunting for or know that I need to read. It never ceases to amaze me that, more often than not, the book my fingers find is exactly the perfect book that teaches me something that I need to learn.

WOMEN WHO BUILD

Habitat Women Who Build

HABITAT RULES: There is an incredibly strong link between women and homes. Women are the “gatherers,” the ones who nurture and support the family. This is why we have a passion to support Habitat For Humanity’s mission and eliminate poverty housing worldwide.

WOMEN WHO BUILD: Formed in the fall of 2008 by HR expert and longtime Habitat board member Alice Waagen, our group — a growing grassroots effort that works under the umbrella of Habitat for Humanity Northern Virginia — is determined to bring together women from all walks of life to help build the newest Habitat for Humanity of Northern VA project at Maple Ridge in Fairfax, VA.

OUR GOAL: We have grand plans for what we want to accomplish (we are a bunch of determined women, after all). To build a house for a family-in-need, for instance, we need to raise $180,000. That’s a tall order, we realize, so our first goal is to raise $5000 — enough to sponsor one work day. Please help us by making a donation!. For every $50 you donate, we’ll send you 5 buttons (3×4 inches big) of our revved-up Rosie, created by our friend and illustrator Michael Gibbs. They look great on a coat lapel!
